Analysis of the topology of interaction/recurrence networks reconstructed from climate time series has recently been proposed as an approach to understand climate variability. In this talk a critical assessment is given on the usefulness of this approach regarding the detection and analysis of climate transitions. First a short introduction to complex network theory, interaction/recurrence network reconstruction and the topological analysis techniques will be given. Then, focus will be on two example problems: (i) transitions in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and (ii) transitions in the wind-driven ocean circulation.
