In this talk I will first review the semi-geostrophic (SG) model in the shallow water context and the stability theorems based on the conservation of wave-activities. Then I will show an application of the continuously stratified SG model in examining the stability of basic flow under the SST-wind stress coupling, and compare the drastic different stability conditions between the SG and QG models.
